I have today read on the internet that a revolutionary car seat belt harness has been developed in Dubai for use by pregnant women that will protect an unborn child in a traffic accident. " />

The project to design the harness has been ongoing for the last ten years and a safety researcher at Loughborough University was part of the project. The harness "SeatBeltPlus" won an enterprise award at the university and is now looking for funding for mass production.

The biggest danger to an unborn child is that the placenta will become dethatched from the uterus wall during causing the unborn child to be starved of oxygen and it is estimated that this accounts for 80 per cent of all foetal deaths during car accidents. Mr Al Dah from Dubai says that only a very small number of pregnant women wear a seat belt correctly and adds that if the belt is worn above the hip bone during an accident it can seriously damage the placenta. The team at Loughborough found only 11 per cent of pregnant women wore seat belts correctly during their study and even when the seat belt is positioned correctly at first the belt does not often stay in position.
