I have read this week a worryingly familiar statistic that only one in five of those surveyed by MoneySupermarket had the right travel insurance coverage.  At least those respondents bothered to buy any travel insurance at all; 51 per cent of those surveyed planned to travel this summer without any travel insurance.  The consequences of doing so could be financially disastrous.  The British Consulate puts the average cost of medical treatment abroad, when needed, at over £2,000.00.  This is one holiday cost you do not want to be facing.

Make sure you travel with comprehensive coverage which suits your needs.  Most policies will also cover you if you need to bring a claim when you get home.  The legal expenses section will pay for a solicitor to investigate any potential claim and, provided the case has merit, to pursue it further.  If you are involved in an accident abroad then gather as much evidence as you can while still in resort, take photographs, get witness details, make sure the incident is reported to hotel staff, holiday reps and the local authorities.  Reporting an incident to the police is particularly important if it happened in a public place or was a crime.

Most people travel abroad without incident.  The trouble is that you never know what might happen and being well prepared and spending a small amount of money on the right travel insurance will ensure you have the protection you need should things go wrong.

By now you should not have to think twice to answer the question to buy or not to buy. The answer is, of course, buy!
