Unions are up in arms, and it will come as no surprise that businesses have allegedly welcomed the move.

The idea behind it is to cut through the red tape and supposed heavy burden placed on businesses when we are in a time of recession.  In future only high risk industries such as construction or those with a poor track record will face regular health and safety inspections.  Businesses such as shops, offices, pubs and clubs will be exempt.

Legislation is to be introduced next month, coming into force in April next year.

I cannot help but feel this is a bad move.  Legislation is not a heavy burden.  It is there to protect workers and visitors to the workplace.  Recession or not - what about those who will no longer be protected and find themselves unable to work through no fault of their own?  Do they not have a voice?  What about the heavy burden on them?

Perhaps Vince Cable should spend the day with a personal injury lawyer......
