I was unaware that, by law, the Health Service is required to automatically fund drugs recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). Unfortunately, this does not always happen.

Organisations have until April 2013 to reveal such lists. This will enable patients to check on drugs that are approved and to challenge Trusts if they do not provide NICE approved drugs. It will also be obvious if Trusts are breaking the law. This will impact on funding. David Stout (Deputy Chief Executive of the NHS Confederation) said it is "absolutely right" that patients get the treatment they are entitled to but warned that the NHS has a "finite" amount of money available.

This is a good step, allowing clarity for patients and Trusts. If NICE says yes so should NHS Organisations. It is hoped that this will put an end to post code lotteries.
