Today when I arrived at work I noticed a press release from the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) regarding just such an accident, reported and forwarded to me by LexisNexis.  The equipment? A defective potato crusher.

Both the supplier of the potato crusher and the farmer who took delivery of the machine were fined by the HSE and ordered to pay costs when a farm employee suffered injury to tendons in his hand when attempting to remove stones from the machine.  The HSE found that there was no safety guard on the machine, nor was there an instruction manual.

LexisNexis report that the HSE found that the farmer had failed to properly assess the risks to his employees and to operate a safe system of work.  They were also in breach of statute as was the supplier of the machinery.

It is never wise to cut corners.  Prevention is always better than cure.
