Results show that between 2005 and 2010, the percentage of newborn babies initially breastfed rose from:

78 per cent to 83 per cent in England.

67 per cent to 71 per cent in Wales, and

70 per cent to 74 per cent in Scotland.

For Northern Ireland, there was no statistically significant change between 2005 and 2010.Across the UK, the percentage of mothers smoking before or during pregnancy fell from 33 per cent to 26 per cent between 2005 and 2010.

This is very good news and demonstrates all the hard work by midwifes and clinicians in promoting a healthy pregnancy which will result in a healthier start in life for many babies.

Smoking levels before or during pregnancy were highest in Wales (33 per cent) and lowest in England (26 per cent). A smaller percentage of all mothers smoked throughout pregnancy in 2010 (12 per cent compared to 17 per cent in 2005).The full report can be read here.
