It has been reported that Councils throughout Britain are shutting off or dimming street lighting in order to save money on energy costs.
This is happening in residential areas, town centres, cycle paths, footpaths, roads and motorways and the Police and safety campaigners are concerned this will cause more crime as well as increase road accidents.
An investigation by the Sunday Telegraph found that street lights on 3,080 miles of trunk roads and motorways remain off in England and 47 miles of motorway do not have lights between 12am and 5am which includes stretches on the M1, M2, M4, M5 and M6 and 70% of the motorway is not lit at night.
The majority of councils have confirmed they dim or turn off lights which helps to reduce energy bills especially as the energy providers are increasing their prices. The Highways Agency say that by shutting off the lights this also helps to meet the carbon emissions targets by cutting electricity consumption.
However, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents say that the presence of street lights not only reduces accidents but also the seriousness of the accidents and research shows that the public is in favour of lighted streets which I believe should outweigh the argument to shut off or dim street lighting.
