The hospital already houses internationally recognised paediatric units in intensive care and cardiac services within Ocean Ward. The hospital was recently approved as a provider of children's cardiac services, having been rated as the second best in the country, in a major shake up of children's cardiac services seeking to concentrate expertise in centres of excellence, although this process is now controversially under further review.

The Piam Brown Ward is well known across the Wessex region and beyond for providing exceptional care in the areas of paediatric oncology and haematology, caring for children from the ages of birth to 16, who have been diagnosed with cancer. The hospital also houses a renowned paediatric neurological unit and I have been fortunate enough to meet a number of parents whose very sick children have been brought to Southampton for expert care from Wales, the Scilly Isles and the Channel Islands, as well as from along the South Coast.

As I know from personal experience, the paediatric A&E Department has also improved significantly in recent years, with dedicated and separate areas and staff, where the emphasis is upon making their patients – from babies to older teenagers – feel as relaxed as possible in the circumstances.

The new Children's Hospital will seek to bring together these and other areas of paediatric medical expertise from across the hospital, within a dedicated unit. The focus is intended to be on, in addition to the medical expertise available, children's needs, whatever their age, and those of their families. This will include the environmental factors which promote a positive outlook to what is undoubtedly a traumatic time, such as a dedicated accommodation block for parents of seriously ill children.

As a mum living in the locality, I am delighted. In common with most parents, I have had the opportunity to visit my local hospital on more occasions than I would wish, and for the most part I have been very impressed with the paediatric care afforded at Southampton General Hospital, but the setting in which this is provided will undoubtedly improve in a dedicated paediatric setting.

As a clinical negligence lawyer I am all too aware of the fact that medical treatment does not always go to plan, but hopefully a dedicated paediatric unit such as this will minimise the risk of administrative, transfer and clinical treatment errors occurring.
