Not only are sensors built into the cars but also into the streets, which will minimise the risk of accidents in circumstances such as missing a red traffic light, pedestrians crossing roads and advancing from blind spots.

The testing has been carried out on a facility in Japan the size of three baseball stadiums and is similar to the artificial roads used at driving schools although the site is much bigger. The safety system will use a pedestrian triggered beeping sound in the car and a picture of a person will also pop up on the screen in front of the driver, when the car approaches a junction an arrow will pop up to indicate other cars approaching the junction and if the driver is tempted to ignore a red light an electronic female voice will say "It's a red light".

Toyota sees preventing collisions and watching out for pedestrians as being the key to ensuring safety in the cars of the future.
