It is unfortunate, because if bowel cancer is diagnosed in its early stages, 90% of cases can be treated successfully and a complete cure is a realistic possibility.  If however it is diagnosed in the latter stages, the survival rate diminishes and a complete cure is unlikely.  This is because the longer it takes to diagnose, the more likely the cancer is to spread to other organs.

Treatment for bowel cancer is typically with surgery.  Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are also other methods of treatment used.

The most common symptoms of bowel cancer are:

  • Blood in your stools (faeces);
  • A change in your regular bowel habits, e.g. constipation or diarrhoea, that's severe or lasts for two weeks or more
  • Unexplained weight loss.
  • Stomach pain or discomfort that lasts for two weeks or more
  • Persistent pain in the back passage or anus
Please see your GP urgently if you have any of those symptoms.  An early diagnosis can make all the difference in the outcome.
