The Patients' Association have warned in their latest report about the ongoing issues with the care of patients in hospitals. The report uses the patients' stories to demonstrate some of the worst aspects of care in our hospitals.

One of the worst story was about Mr Bownam, who was admitted to a hospital in South Wales and put on a ward that specifically cared for people with dementia.

However, he was able to escape many times and on the final occasion was found having tragically drowned in a nearby river.

A lot of the examples demonstrate patients and families concerns about the lack of communication and lack of basic care and attention to detail in the care of patients.  These are all things that could be easily addressed and the Association has worked with the Care Quality Commission to identify and act on poor care with the next phase of their work focusing on the experience of the elderly.

The report also provides examples of positive aspects of care and maintains that across the board the majority of healthcare professionals have the skills and ability to perform their duties to the highest standards.  It emphasises the necessity for putting patients needs above the need to meet targets and benchmarks.   The experience of some patients is alarming and unacceptable but it is encouraging to learn that through the work of the Patients Association and the CQC some positive changes have been brought about.
