The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) are calling for Government to act in order to save motorcyclists lives by making roadside crash barriers safer.

Their action follows a Swedish government report advising that the existing barriers actually make roads more dangerous for motorcyclists.  IAM allege that motorcyclists hitting a crash barrier is a factor in up to 16% of rider deaths.  They want shields added to barriers to prevent riders sliding underneath or colliding with posts.

IAM's director of policy and research stated "Our crash barriers are designed with cars in mind, but they can cause more harm than good for motorcyclists.  Modifications are happening across Europe as Governments recognise this". Whether our Government follows suit is a waiting game but lets hope they see the sense and logic in safety for all road users.
