It is a constant source of information and guidance in my role as a personal injury lawyer.

I was interested to note that they have now launched new guidance aimed specifically at Offices and their staff.  There is advice on risk assessments and how to control risks at work.  There are links to advice on home working, ergonomics and working with VDUs, to name but a few.  Advice is provided for both employer and employee.

It is fair to say, I believe, that when thinking of Health & Safety we do not necessarily consider an office based workplace as presenting health and safety risks.  Manual workers usually spring to mind.  But, have a look around your office and see how many hazards you can see.  Perhaps an electrical wire powering your PC laid across the floor - a trip hazard.  Or a box of files balanced on top of a shelving unit - they could fall and cause a nasty injury.  Or maybe even a filing cabinet where the drawer inhibitors are defective and there is the risk of it toppling over on top of you?

When I joined Blake Lapthorn as part of my induction I viewed a Health & Safety video highlighting risks in the workplace.  Of course, I work in an office environment.  The video caused quite a few giggles between me and my colleagues, but there was clearly an serious side.  Ironically, the "funny" thing is that nearly all of the risks were so obvious, but so easily avoided. A little bit of common sense goes a long way.
