The figure is expected to rise, particularly after Christmas.

Noroviruses are the most common cause of infectious gastroenteritis or 'gastric flu' in the UK, and although not usually dangerous for the vast majority of sufferers, the very young, elderly and sick are at risk of complications such as dehydration and may require hospital admission. Symptoms usually start between 24 and 48 hours after infection and the first sign is a sudden onset of nausea followed by vomiting and watery diahorrea.

Symptoms usually disappear after a day or two.  The infection is caught from an infected person or infected surface so good hygiene is important in decreasing your chances of contracting Norovirus.  For more information including what to do if you think you have Norovirus, click here.
