Diabetes is caused by an inability to use of produced the hormone insulin which results in a rise in blood glucose.  If treatment does not keep blood glucose within target ranges, people with diabetes develop life threatening and disabling long term complications.
There are 3.7 million people in Britain with diabetes.  This figure is expected to rise by 5 million by 2025.   Sufferers of Type 1 diabetes are at risk of premature death but care provided to these patients can reduce these risks.  The report has shown that some areas of lower diabetes related complications than other areas.
People with diabetes are 64.9% more likely to be admitted to hospital with heart failure than the general population.   The analysis confirms that in people with diabetes, the risk of any cardio vascular complication increases with age and being male.  There is also an increased risk for those living in the most deprived fifth of areas and for those from South Asian ethnic groups.
The report estimates that there were 22,000 "excess deaths" associated with diabetes in England last year.  It suggests that these deaths are largely attributable to failings in care and it also highlights the unacceptable variations in the care and treatment received.
Better education about diabetes, treatment and care should be a priority.
