Snow, fog, ice - it is looking like this winter will be harsh.
In my home town, the first snow flakes started to fall last week when December had only just got going. It didn't really come to anything but freezing temperatures and fog have forced the cancellation of flights at Heathrow Airport this morning.
The winter weather always offers a timely reminder on passenger rights following flight cancellation or delay. The Denied Boarding Regulations (EC Regulation 261/2004) set out the airline's obligations. Passengers are entitled to the following:-
- reimbursement of the cost of the ticket or a return flight to the first point of departure or re-routing to their final destination;
- the care package which includes refreshments, meals, hotel accommodation, transport between the airport and place of accommodation, two free telephone calls, telex or fax messages, or e-mails.
The right to receive the care package depends on the length of your flight in conjunction with the length of the delay. Do not let airlines fob you off if you are stranded - they have an obligation to provide information about your rights as a passenger if your flight is cancelled or delayed. Hopefully the weather will not be quite so extreme as we move into the Christmas peak travel season!
