Quad bikes (known as ATVs – All Terrain Vehicles) are often used on farms as a convenient way of getting around both off road and on road. Farm workers should be provided with proper personal protective equipment as with any other type of work. That includes helmets to wear on quad bikes. I read today of a farmer who was fined by the HSE when he allowed one of his workers to use a quad bike with faulty brakes. The bike was in a head-on collision with a car and the worker, 17 year old Phillip Nyhan, died from his injuries.

The HSE publish guidance for the use of quad bikes on their website which you can read here.
