A skier in California's Tahoe National Forest has captured the moment he rescued another skier buried in snow after an avalanche.

While most skiers would not head out with a head-cam attached to their ski helmet, this footage is a chilling reminder of the importance of staying safe on the slopes.

Fortunately for this skier he walked away largely unscathed, although no doubt very shocked by the avalanche.

If you do ski off-piste this winter then remember:-

  1. Check the avalanche risk and weather warnings for the day ahead;
  2. Never go alone;
  3. Carry a received and transmitter;
  4. Make sure you and your skiing companions are well equipped with shovels and other supplies and
  5. Tell someone who is staying on-piste or back at the ski chalet of your plans.
