In 2013, it is estimated that around 82,640 European women will die from lung cancer, while 88,886 will die from breast cancer. It is suggested that the worrying rise in lung cancer death among women is apparently due to the large number of young women who started smoking in the 1960s and 1970s. Figures from Cancer Research UK (CRUK) show that every year 157,000 children in the UK alone start smoking. As CRUK points out, this stark fact highlights the importance of reducing the number of people who smoke by both encouraging smokers to quit and through the introduction of plain, standardised packaging 'to give young people one less reason to start'.
Contact your local GP surgery for help and advice about how to quit.
