I have read that in a crash at 30mph, if you are not wearing a seatbelt you will hit the front seat, possibly with a force of between 30 and 60 times your own body weight.

This could result in death or serious injury to you and people sitting in the front seat.

When I learnt to drive it was compulsory to wear a seatbelt although this was not the case when my parents were taught. This is why I was under the impression that it was usually older people who were most likely not to wear their seatbelt, simply by forgetting as they had not learn out of habit.

Once again this is shown not to be the case as I have recently read a story in the news about Dean Gaffney sustaining a head injury because he had a car accident when he was not wearing a seatbelt. The article on the Daily Mail website shows him with a 4 inch scar on his forehead and he considers himself lucky to be alive. A doctor told him had he been wearing his seatbelt it is likely that he would have only sustained a minor whiplash injury.

Any compensation for personal injuries can be reduced if you were not wearing a seat belt.
