The CQC found that one in six care homes did not always provide privacy and dignity when caring for their elderly residents.  A similar number failed to support their residents to eat and drink sufficient amounts.  In care homes for residents with dementia, staff were less likely to meet the standards relating to respect and safeguarding and the CQC found that not all staff caring for people with dementia had the appropriate skills, knowledge and expertise.

The CQC's work in exposing these problems and failures is welcome but these are basic standards and it is alarming that elderly people have to endure such poor care and neglect.  The Care Minister, Norman Lamb, has stated that he wants Britain to be the best country in the world to grow old in but, as he acknowledges, there is a lot of work to do.
