recently blogged on a local firm being fined for breach of health and safety so I was therefore interested to read in the Daily Echo of another company failing to comply with health and safety." />

W H Rowe, a Southampton engineering firm, have been ordered to pay £11,694.00 after one of their employees injured his foot in a casting machine.  The employee in question trapped his foot in the lower ram of an aluminium casting machine while constructing a fan blade.  Despite being freed by colleagues he sadly had his right toe amputated and also sustained a laceration to the head and fractures to his remaining toes.  He was off work for 13 weeks.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) were involved and determined that the safety devices on the machine were unsuitable and insufficient to protect workers from moving parts.  The accident would have been avoided had the machine been fitted with the appropriate guards and better configured.  The HSE also concluded that the company had failed to carry out a proper risk assessment.

W H Rowe were fined £7,000.00 and ordered to pay costs of £4,694.00.
