A campaign is being launched today by the Travel Association with the support of NFIB, Get Safe Online and Action Fraud to warn the public about holiday fraud.

Holiday fraud takes many forms and I was surprised to read that research carried out by the NFIB shows almost 1,000 cases of holiday fraud were reported in 2012 at a cost of approximately £1.5M. As with any type of fraud the perpetrators are increasingly savvy and anyone is at risk, even those of us who think we're wise to all the tricks out there.

The research indicates that the most common types of fraud relate to flight bookings with either a fake ticket being booked or the ticket never arriving. This type of fraud accounts for 45% of fraud reported to police in 2012.

Next on the list is accommodation fraud with a figure of 33%. The use of websites where villa owners advertise their homes may have led to an increase in this type of fraudulent activity.

Other holiday frauds relate to package holidays particularly where groups may be travelling to attend sporting or religious events.

The research highlights the importance of carrying out research before booking any type of holiday. Make sure the company is a member of a trade association such as ABTA. You can easily run a search on the ABTA website to confirm a company is registered rather than simply relying on the fact that their logo shows on a website. It is also worth considering making any payment over £100 with a credit card as you will have greater protection than if you pay by bank transfer or pay in cash should something go wrong.

For more useful information on how to avoid holiday fraud, take a look at the City of London police and ABTA.
