Pregnancy and childbirth are often described as the 'most natural experiences in the world'. Unfortunately, due to complications during pregnancy and labour, often through causes unknown, many women are left traumatised by the experience.

The Birth Trauma Association says that 10,000 women a year in the UK develop post traumatic stress disorder following the birth of their child and that up to 200,000 may also feel traumatised by the experience.

I was therefore interested to read about the Centre for Better Births at Liverpool's Women's Hospital.  This new research centre aims to investigate exactly how the womb works in order to better understand the problems some women experience in labour and childbirth so that certain 'predictors' may be learned to help us anticipate who may be at risk of, and thus avoid, certain birth-related problems.

The incidence of emergency Caesarean Sections for example has risen by almost 50% in the last 30 years and, among other issues, it is hoped that the research will provide answers as to why this may be.

The causes of other serious occurrences such as premature labour, particularly in twin pregnancies, miscarriage and stillborn babies will also be studied.
