The Scottish Herald have today reported that the use of black boxes in young drivers' vehicles is cutting the number of accidents and lowering the premiums.

It is reported that 30,000 drivers aged between 17 and 25 have signed up for the scheme which involves fitting a device similar to the size of an iPod to their vehicles.

Co-operative Insurance who initiated the trial said it has repaid £6 million (£188 per person) to its best-driving young customers since the introduction of the scheme two years ago.

The head of motor insurance, Grant Mitchell, recognises that affordable insurance costs for young people is an ongoing problem but this scheme helps to make insurance more affordable as well as showing that the drivers with the black boxes tend to drive more safely than those without.

Something for the UK Government to consider rather than bringing in curfews and restricting passengers for new motorists.
