I was amazed to read that 1 in 5 Plymouth women are putting themselves at risk of cervical cancer by not taking up the offer of free cervical smear testing.

Dr Lam, a GP and specialist in genito-urinary medicine at Derriford Hospital explains that early detection and treatment can prevent 75 per cent of cervical cancers from developing and that not going for cervical screening is one of the biggest risk factors for developing cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer is not rare and in relatively recent years the number of cases has fallen due to the uptake of cervical screening tests, however there are still over 2000 new cases of cervical cancer diagnosed each year.  Most of these occur in women who have never accepted screening or who have not been screened for many years.  All women between the ages of 25 and 65 in England are invited to undergo screening and it is estimated that up to 3900 women are prevented from developing cervical cancer each year in the UK alone due to screening.
