The relationship between bicycles and cars on the road can be very fraught and whenever there is an accident one blames the other.

The majority of drivers are very careful and aware of cyclists and not all accidents are down to car drivers as cyclists can be just as careless when on the road and assume they can be seen by all.

Apart from accidents which happen whilst travelling along the road, another major cause of accidents involving cyclist is when people are getting out of parked cars,  and cyclists get knocked off their bikes by opening car doors.

I was listening to a news item at the end of last week which talked about how to cut down such accidents. An interesting suggestion was made, which was to change the direction car doors open out.  Currently the majority of car doors open out towards the front of the car and one automatically looks ahead.  If the mechanics of car doors were changed to open out towards the rear of the car, then one would automatically look behind and would see any oncoming cyclists.

Something for the car industry to think about!
