Group B Strep is the most common cause of serious infection in newborn babies. Most of these infections could be prevented.

Statistics show that Group B Strep infection kills around 40 babies per year and results in serious disabilities in a further 25 babies.  Although many western countries routinely offer pregnant women a test to detect Group B Strep, we do not in the UK.

The charity, Group B Strep Support, is aiming to highlight awareness of the condition his month. Their 3 main aims are to:

  1. Offer information and support to families affected by group B Streptococcus;
  2. Inform health professionals and individuals how most group B Strep infections in newborn babies can be prevented; and
  3. Generate continued support for research into preventing group B Strep infections in newborn babies.

Public awareness of this condition is vital. The late or missed diagnosis of Strep B, and therefore the missed opportunity to treat can be absolutely critical. Medical staff need to be alert to the symptoms of infection babies may display after birth so as to intervene with appropriate treatment as soon as possible and prevent serious injury.
