Following on from a post written by my colleague Annabelle Eyre, last week it appears that hospitals in special measures have paid out millions in compensation.
In 2009/10 the Trust paid out about £8.4m; it paid out £6.7m in 2010/11; £4.1m in 2011/12. To date this financial year, the trust has paid out £438,240, although it expects this figure to rise to about £1.5m by the end of the year.
The Trust, which runs hospitals in Goole, Grimsby and Scunthorpe has been told to make savings of around £15million by 2015 although how they will be able to do this and improve the care provided to patients remains to be seen.
One suggestion going forward to improve hospital care has been for NHS patients to join inspection team to assess hospitals across the UK. This suggestion was put forward by Professor Sir Mike Richards, the new Chief Inspector of Hospitals. Under his reforms the review teams will be made up of patients, doctors, nurses and other professionals. They will give all hospitals in England ratings as 'outstanding' 'good', 'requires improvement' or 'inadequate". It is suggested that these reviews going forward will be more robust, fair and transparent.
It will be interesting to see if these reviews lead to an improvement in patient care and a reduction in clinical negligence claims.
