Medical charges appear to be under the spotlight on cruise ships, following a recent survey by Which? Travel.

According to the survey, one in five of the 1,368 members who had been on a cruise reported that they had visited the ship's doctors, facing an average bill of £233. Twelve of the claims were for £500 or more and one reported a charge of £6,500.

For Brits who are used to receiving treatment under the NHS, treatments onboard cruise ships, charged at private healthcare rates, would seem excessive and unreasonable.

If you are heading off on a cruise, make sure you check your travel insurance. Policies will often include medical excess clauses which might mean you would end up with a hefty bill to pay. A good insurer will usually employ medics to assess what treatment is reasonable and proportionate.
