Three employees to their faces whilst working at an International Chemical Company in Southampton.

Employers have a duty of care under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1972 to take all reasonable steps to make sure your place of work is safe and free from hazards and danger. The company in question had 9250 meters of pipe work which they failed to ensure was in a safe condition. Corrosion had been allowed to take hold of a section of the pipe work which carried 96 percent sulphuric acid and subsequently failed.

The Health and Safety Executive successfully brought proceedings against the company in Southampton Crown Court for serious Health & Safety failings.

I can't imagine how the employees must have felt when they were hit by a spray of acid whilst they were just going about their normal duties. All the men showered quickly and received first aid and thankfully therefore their injuries were less serious than they could have been.
