I was horrified to hear on the news this morning that the elderly in this country have less chance of surviving cancer than anywhere else in Europe.

According to research  carried out by Macmillan Cancer Support and the National Cancer Intelligence Network, over-65s can live for many years after cancer but they believe that this could be higher but for the fact that many older patients are being assessed on their age alone and not their overall fitness.

The comparisons with survival rates in Europe are quite startling. Pensioners with lung cancer have a 44% less chance of survival than those in Europe and Patients in their 70s and 80s with kidney cancer have a 32 per cent survival rate, compared with 46-53 per cent in Europe.

Macmillan's report demonstrate that with the right care and access to treatment, older patients have good survival rates with over 130,000 people surviving 10 years after being diagnosed with cancer aged 65 or over.  Access to appropriate and successful treatments should not be determined by someone's age.
