Margaret Hodge, the Committee Chair said; " There is evidence that many maternity services are running at a loss, or at best breaking even, and that the available funding may be insufficient for trusts to employ enough midwives and consultants to provide high quality, safe care"

I was very concerned to read that the report suggests that low morale is causing nearly one third of midwives to consider leaving the profession within one year. This would be a devastating loss to the NHS and have a significant impact on mothers and babies.

Midwives have skills that enable them to manage pregnant mothers, without medical issues, through their antenatal care, labour, delivery and postnatal care without input from a doctor. As such, they are an asset that needs to be protected. Why is moral so low? Is the issue something that can be resolved? The Commons Public Accounts Committee has raised concerns. I do hope that they are  followed up and appropriate action taken.

We need to care for our midwives so that they can care for mothers and babies in the future.
