Since the social networking trend for the no-make-up 'selfie' started in mid-March over £8 million has been raised for Cancer Research UK.

Women all over the Country have been taking photos of themselves without make-up on and donating money to Cancer Research before nominating their friends and family to do the same.

There have been lots of celebrities getting involved and not wanting to miss out, men have been putting on make-up on to raise money and raise awareness. It has been suggested that the no-make-up selfie came from a show of solidarity for Kim Novak who went to the Oscars make up free and suffered a backlash. From there the addition of donating money by text with your uploaded picture received a phenomenal amount of support.

Although the charity did not start the campaign it has benefited greatly from the money donated and its profile being raised. Cancer Research UK is also using the opportunity to remind people to check themselves for lumps. The earlier cancer can be detected and treated the better chance someone has of being treated.

Some critics have slated the social network craze for being about vanity and the real message being lost. With some people arguing that posting a photo doesn't go far enough to raise awareness about cancer. However with the amount raised and the fact that Cancer Research has been bought to the forefront of social media and national press there is little argument to say that this trend has not been successful. Many people were also using it as an opportunity to leave tributes to friends and family who have been victims of cancer. Cancer Research UK receives no government funding for their research so their life-saving work relies on donated money.

Never underestimate the power of social media.
