Last week I was lucky enough to attend an excellent study day organised by Baby Lifeline a national not-for-profit organisation dedicated to raising funds for the purchase of essential maternity equipment and providing high quality training to the medical and legal professions.

The course; 'Predict to Prevent' was held at Maidstone Hospital in Kent and was led by a team of obstetricians and a specialist midwife from hospitals in Manchester and Leeds.  All aspects regarding the issues of 'at risk' pregnancies and prematurity were discussed.

I was shocked to learn, in a poll of 17 countries, that the UK ranked bottom for neonatal mortality rates in 2013 with Iceland ranking top.  It was very reassuring however to learn about the research being undertaken and the services, both local and national, dedicated to 'at risk' mothers and premature babies.

The definition of a premature baby is one born prior to 37 weeks.  Reassuringly, over 90% of premature babies now survive the immediate post partum period, however prematurity can be associated with a number of morbidity factors including, interestingly, ADHD, which may not necessarily be obvious until later in life.

The course covered the definitions and causes of low-weight babies and pre-term birth and risk factors were related to; age, ethnicity, social factors and smoking, with clinical risk factors relating to womb size and shape, placental characteristics and infection.   We discussed the measures used to predict and prevent premature births and the management of these 'at risk' mothers to ensure that their babies are born at the optimum time for them.

In all, it was a very interesting and enlightening day; delegates included midwives and obstetricians and a small number of lawyers, which made the discussions lively!  It was very reassuring to know that there are so many skilled and passionate people out there dedicated to improving the lot of 'at risk' mother and premature babies.
