I was encouraged to learn about NICE's recent guidelines on minimal nursing staffing levels on wards.

These are is to address some of the concerns about the standard of patient care that were raised during the Francis Inquiry on the Mid Staffs scandal and have been trialled at 14 different hospitals.  Adequate staffing levels should go some way ensure patient's safety and addressing patient's care when things can go wrong.

The guidelines suggest that when a registered nurse is care for more than 8 patients this is the point at which there should be alarm bells ringing.  It will obviously require a big financial commitment up front from NHS Trusts but by ensuring that patients are at the centre of staffing decisions and the focus of staff, prevention of infections and pressure sores will save the NHS a considerable amount overall.

I hope that these changes will have the desired effect on patient care and safety.
