Did you know that motorcyclists represent 1% of traffic volume yet account for up to 20% of the deaths and serious injuries on our roads or that motorcyclists involved in accidents are 40 times for likely to be killed than car drivers?

These are just two of the facts that are detailed on the Biker Down! Leaflet my husband brought from home from the MotoGP this weekend. As a motorcycle instructor he is more conscious than most of the dangers of motorcycling and is always keen to promote safety on our roads.

Biker Down! Is a free course aimed at educating motorcyclists, their partners, car drivers and all road users who may be the first responder at a motorcycle collision or incident.

The course includes a presentation from the member of the Biker Down! team covering scene management and the priorities and personal safety for a road user chancing upon a road traffic collision or incident. The first aid element of the course is delivered by qualified lift support instructors with motorcycle first aid a specific expertise. It focuses on the trauma and mechanism of injury, basic life support, managing spinal injuries and crash helmet removal. Finally the course provides instruction and advice on conspicuity, discussing phenomena such as motion camouflage and looming.

I have no doubt that my husband will be booking me on this course and for once I don’t think I will complain. As a pillion passenger if I am first on scene to any accident then I can only benefit from attending and learning. You never know I might help save a life. Gets a bit serious if you think about it like that doesn't it?
