I recently attended a study day at 7 Bedford Row last Wednesday (10th September) organised by the Brain Injury Group, which was a follow on from a study day that I attended earlier this year.

I enjoyed an early morning walk from the station in the sunshine. The venue was excellent and the catering was up to its normal high standard. The networking was good and I was pleased to make new contacts.

All the speakers provided relevant and interesting information. Dr Derar Badwan, Lead Clinician in Rehabilitation Medicine at the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire, spoke about disorders of consciousness and provided a useful chart detailing what signs you would expect in the various conscious states of coma, vegetative state, minimally conscious state and locked in.

Mr Robert Tranter, ENT Consultant, refreshed my memory on the cranial nerves and highlighted the affects that a brain injury can have.

Professor Adrian Williams from the London Sleep Clinic considered sleep disorders and fatigue. I was very relieved to hear that yawning means you are sleepy rather than bored. Just talking about sleep put us all into yawning mode despite a very interesting and enlightening lecture.

Dr Marc Beale from Malvern Scientific Solutions provides assistive technology. I was very impressed with the fact that he will invent an adaptation to provide individual services to a client if a particular product does not meet a need.

Mark Timmins from Timmins Whittaker provides specialist insurance for homes and reminded the delegates how important it is to ensure that if a trust is set up; the insurance is in the name of the trust and it covers any adaptations and specialist equipment.

Ben and Nigel Burton talked about Idapt LLP which uses an online 3D visualisation tool for assessing space and making property recommendations. Ben was a lawyer and uses his experience to assist the firm's expert witness report practice.

This was a very enjoyable day. I generally find some lectures in such study days less useful or relevant to my practice. However, all the speakers provided very helpful information that will assist me when dealing with my brain injured clients.
