I have seen and dealt with a number of claims for people who have fallen from ladders and are injured. Ladders are used every day around the home and garden by all of us and it might seem odd to some people that there might be a successful claim when someone is injured using a ladder at work.
However, the HSE website states that 'falls from height are one of the biggest causes of workplace fatalities and major injuries' and gives plenty of guidance about the use and training required for those working at height, including those using ladders.
I read recently of the inquest into the death of workman David Wood. He was using a ladder to access a loft. The ladder was not properly secured and he sadly fell onto a stone-tiled floor and died as a result of the head injury that he suffered as a result.
The Coroner Graham Short commented that the loft ladder had been fitted incorrectly, without a retaining bar assembly. As David was descending the ladder it seems that the ladder slid away and that is when he fell.
A reminder to us all that something which seems as simple and straightforward as using a loft ladder still needs to have careful and thorough preparation and that the consequences of not doing that can be unexpectedly tragic.
