As I was driving to work last week the BBC announced that the Government wants the UK to become a world leader in driverless technology.
A code of practice will be published in the spring allowing testing of autonomous cars and the self-drive pods that are to be tested in Milton Keynes and Coventry were unveiled. The report can be read here.
Apart from testing the cars and considering the change in the Highway code, adjustments to MOT test guidelines and car maintenance checks necessary to accommodate driverless cars on the road, there also has to be consideration of who will be responsible in the event of a collision and how to make sure both drivers and pedestrians are safe.
Transport Minister Claire Perry has said "driverless vehicle technology has the potential to be a real game-change on the UK's road, altering the fact of motoring in the most fundamental of ways and delivering major benefits for road safety, social inclusion, emissions and congestion."
The Government is providing £19m to launch four driverless car schemes which include a fully autonomous shuttle in Greenwich and a BAE System-developed Wildcar vehicle to be tested in Bristol.
Of course technology moves on and hopefully will make travel easier and less provide less congestion on the roads, but hope the project is given enough time to develop so that we get it right and make sure driverless cars work safely and productively on our roads and there are proper guidelines when things go wrong.
