Mohammad Siddiqui, a former paediatric surgical fellow at University Hospitals Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, has been struck from the UK medical register for not adhering to basic hygiene measures during home circumcisions and showing a 'blatant disregard' for patient safety.
Whilst working at Southampton General Hospital Mr Siddiqui also undertook private paediatric circumcision operations in patients' homes. A panel of the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service found him guilty of a number of failures in relation to performing religious circumcisions in the homes of four babies. Mr Siddiqui's negligent practice included causing skin loss leading to corrective surgery, operating under inadequate levels of local anaesthesia and failure to recognise that one baby was having a seizure as a reaction to the anaesthetic.
Mr Siddiqui failed to undertake an acceptable level of pre-operative examination or to advise parents of the risks associated with the procedure which meant that the parents were not able to give informed consent. Mr Siddiqui did not carry adequate resuscitation equipment, was not registered with the Care Quality Commission, which was a requirement, and he had no indemnity insurance. Further details available on the British Medical Journal website.
I am appalled by the arrogance and clear sub-standard care this man demonstrated for more than a year between 2012 and 2013 and am relieved he will no longer be able to practice in this way. This case illustrates the importance, when looking for a private surgeon or clinician, of carrying out thorough research into an individual's credentials including, where possible, a 'word of mouth' recommendation.
