Time to belt up- it really will make a difference!

A shocking amount of motorists have been caught not strapping up behind the wheel in the past three years. More than 2,000 people have been prosecuted for essential risking their lives. It’s a little easy for us to become comfortable and think 'nothing will happen to me', but it is important we do not grow ignorant to the dangers of not wearing a seatbelt.

The Daily Echo reports that one officer has described motorists as 'becoming complacent'.  Statistics actually show that 12 fatal collisions and two crashes resulting in serious injuries were caused over the same period by motorists failing to wear their seatbelt properly.

Motorists caught driving without a seatbelt can be fined up to £500 or alternatively offered a driver training course if they have not been caught previously within the past three years. The Daily Echo also reports one officer saying that 'You are twice as likely to die in a Collison if you aren’t wearing a seatbelt , if unrestrained, you could will hit the windscreen at a force of 30 to 60 times your own body weight.'

Seatbelts can seriously reduce the number of serious traffic injuries by 50 percent and fatalities by 60-70 percent. There is evidence that people are less likely to wear seatbelts on short or familiar journeys with lower speeds but do not be influenced to part take as this could still be a fatal decision. Issues also arise regarding the correct fitting of child seats. Figures suggest nearly three in every five child seats are incorrectly fitted. You and your passengers safety should be paramount every time you step foot inside your vehicle this is so, even if it is a quick 'pop to the shop!'
