The BBC reports that six people have been convicted of the sexual abuse of some 15 teenage girls in Rotherham between 1987 and 2003. The charges include multiple rapes and indecent assaults. Two women were convicted of conspiracy to procure prostitutes and of false imprisonment.
All six will be sentenced this week.
The fact that the charges span a period of 16 years, and involve multiple Defendants should give the reader some idea of the way in which the abuse of children can be perpetrated by offenders of both sexes, and the way in which a culture of abuse can grow up unchecked in one area of the country. This is of course, the latest of a series of prosecutions originating from Rotherham.
One of the victims is said to have been in the care of the local authority when she was abused, which raises questions as to what that local authority knew was happening at the time.
The victims would all have potential claims to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority, although the present 2012 Scheme has very strict time limits, which can in certain circumstances be triggered by a police investigation. In addition, there might be claims against the local authority. It is understood that claims have been made in similar cases arising from Rotherham. There is also the possibility of a claim against the convicted individuals, particularly if they have wealth in the form of houses.
