Malcolm Johnson, Senior Associate in our London Clinical Negligence team appeared last night on the "Moral Maze" at 8.00 p.m. on BBC Radio 4.

The Panel, who included Anne McElvoy, Public Policy Editor of The Economist, Claire Fox, Director of The Institute of Ideas; Rev Dr Giles Fraser, and Mathew Taylor, Chief Executive of the Royal Society discussed the issue  of child abuse investigation. One of the questions put to Malcolm was whether child abuse investigation had descended into a witch hunt.

Malcolm says:-

"The dramatic increase in investigations and the rise in convictions reflects the very real problem of child abuse in this country. The police are prepared to treat complainants seriously, and that means that people are less likely to keep their allegations back.  We would not want to go back the position twenty years ago, when both adults and children faced insurmountable obstacles, when it came to approaching the authorities."

The other contributors to the debate were:-

Barbara Hewson - a barrister specialising in criminal law

Peter Hitchens – writer and journalist

Mark Watts - Editor in Chief of the Exaro news website
