I recently read an article that an independent report was carried out on Ward 32 at Bristol Children's Hospital following the deaths of at least seven children. The review was commissioned after the parents of Sean Turner were unhappy with the treatment he had received after being transferred to the Cardio Ward prematurely from Intensive care.

The children were receiving cardio treatment on the ward and a review has found that they were repeatedly given a poor standard of care. The report has made a series of recommendations to the University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, NHS England and the Department of Health.

Despite the recommendations for improvement, the report did not identify the same failures in care and treatment as in the 2001 public inquiry, which found 35 babies died and many more were left brain damaged between 1991 and 1995 at Bristol Royal Infirmary. The Care Quality Commission also conducted a review, which found the standard of care comparable with other centres in the UK.

It is terribly sad to hear that for some of these children, the care did fall below acceptable standards and it must be extremely difficult for their families to accept the report without a finding that the failure in care either caused or contributed to their child's death. Although the result of the report is obviously upsetting, especially for those parents, one thing the report has done is identify areas for improvement and made recommendations to ensure this does not happen again.

Our clinical negligence team works with families and children who have been affected by cases of clinical negligence such as these. As well as highly experienced solicitors, we also have qualified nurses, midwives and doctors in our legal teams who understand the legal and medical issues involved.

Our support helps them to ensure they receive the compensation they need to help them through their journey of recovery, pay medical bills and provide professional care.
