For the less organised amongst us it's fast approaching the time of year where we are all frantically searching for a bargain holiday hoping to soak up some exotic summer sun. When trawling through the vast number of holiday sites you will have noticed some websites advertise ATOL protected holidays, but what does this mean?
All UK travel companies are required by law to be ATOL (Air Travel Organiser's Liscence) protected. This ATOL protection ensures that consumers are not stranded abroad nor do we lose our money in the event that a travel company goes bankrupt.
In January 2017 travel company All Leisure Holidays Limited went bankrupt. Luckily for the 13,000 plus holidaymakers who had holidays booked with the company, All Leisure Holidays Limited were ATOL protected meaning the consumers were entitled to a full refund.
In July 2016 holidaymakers who booked with Low Cost Holidays were not so lucky. In 2013 Low Cost Holidays moved their headquarters to Palma, Majorca and as such were not required by law to be ATOL protected. Low Cost Holidays went bankrupt cancelling over 110,000 holidaymakers' holidays. Low Cost Holidays were not ATOL protected and as such, none of the holidaymakers were able to secure a refund from the travel company.
These are prime examples of why it is so important to ensure your holiday is ATOL protected.
