In breaking news it has been revealed that Costa Cruises, the company that owns the ill-fated cruise liner the Concordia, has offered passengers 11,000 Euros (£9,000) each in compensation.

There was unlikely to be any argument over the cruise company's liability for what happened, not least because of the strict liability regime imposed under the Athens Convention and the Athens Protocol 2002 to which the EU is a signatory.  The scope for debate will be deciding how much each passenger should receive by way of compensation following the disaster and the debate is now well under way.

It is surprising that the company has come up with a figure so quickly.  This at least offers a starting point for negotiations.  Any compensation payouts following the Costa Concordia disaster should, however, be agreed on a case by case basis.  11,000 Euros is little recompense for the families of those who lost their lives following Captain Schettino's alleged negligence.
