Mrs Tebbutt was kidnapped back in September shortly after arriving at a luxury holiday resort in Kenya.  Her husband, David Tebbutt, was sadly killed during the kidnap.  In comments made so far by Mrs Tebbutt she has confirmed that her son, Oliver, organised the payment of a ransom and secured her release although it is unclear how he raised the necessary funds.  The UK Government has offered consular assistance and high level guidance to the family and Mrs Tebbutt throughout her ordeal but it is against Government policy to pay ransoms.

The presence of pirates off the coast of Africa and in the Indian Ocean is an increasing problem for countries that rely on tourism and also the cruise and shipping industry.  Previously, there were reports a member of staff at the hotel where the Tebbutts were staying may have been involved in the kidnapping.  This will be a real source of concern for UK based tour operators offering holidays to countries where piracy and hostage taking is a real risk.  UK tour operators can, in certain circumstances, be held liable for the conduct of a hotel they send guests to, as well as that hotel's staff.

Following this excellent news, Mrs Tebbutt will no doubt be looking forward to a speedy return to the UK and to helping as much as she can in bringing her husband's killers to justice.
