There has been an outbreak of the noro virus bug on the Celebrity Cruises' vessel Constellation.

The ship, which docked in Southampton yesterday morning following a 12 days cruise of France, Spain and Portugal, was found to be carrying about 350 passengers suffering with the highly contagious illness, according to the city's Port Health Authority. Whilst in dock, the ship underwent deep cleaning before it was allowed to begin its latest voyage. It would appear that all new passengers boarding the Constellation yesterday were made aware of the noro virus and given information regarding hygiene procedures.Noro virus is generally spread though contaminated food or water or from touching contaminated surfaces. It tends to develop in confined areas such as cruise ships.

Although this sorry episode is very unfortunate and no doubt the ship has now taken extensive steps to help eradicate the problem, it does not help the passengers who may have been confined to their cabin for several days through illness and have had their holiday ruined as a result.

Whether the ship could have prevented the noro virus or the spread of the illness requires further investigation but there are already unconfirmed reports that the sanitation on board the Constellation may have been below par and if that is so, the victims may have a cause of action against Celebrity Cruise for compensation.
