Reports suggest that passengers became ill with suspected norovirus within hours of the ship setting sail from Southampton for a cruise to the Christmas markets of Northern Europe.

Chris Deacon, a solicitor in Blake Lapthorn's travel claims team commented: "Norovirus is an unpleasant condition at the best of times.  When an outbreak hits a confined space such as a cruise ship it can spread rapidly and it is not surprising that there are reports of passengers describing their holiday as the "cruise from hell."  As the illness is highly contagious, it is very likely that passengers will have been quarantined and not be enjoying the cruise that they had anticipated."

The virus is easily spread by contact with an infected person, especially through their hands, contaminated food or drink or by touching contaminated surfaces or objects.  When an outbreak occurs on a cruise ship, the cruise company does have an obligation to avoid the norovirus spreading.  This will involve ensuring alcogel is made available to passengers, keeping clean towels in fresh and regular supply and disinfecting any surfaces throughout the cruise ship.
